Taung Kwe Pagoda: A Majestic Landmark of Loikaw
Taung Kwe Pagoda, also known as Thiri Mingalar Taung Kwe Pagoda, is one of the most significant religious and cultural landmarks in Loikaw, the capital of Kayah State, Myanmar. Located in the southern part of the city, this pagoda complex is uniquely built atop a cluster of nine natural rocky spires, making it a breathtaking site to visit. The name "Taung Kwe" translates to "Split Mountain," reflecting the distinct rock formations on which the pagoda structures are built.Historical Significance
The pagoda has deep historical and religious roots. Originally referred to as Mingalar Taung Taw, it is known by different names in various local languages: "Phaw Myar" in Kayah, "Taung Kwe" in Burmese, and "Loikaw Fa Hpat" in Shan. It has been a sacred site for centuries, with the earliest structures dating back to the late 19th century. Each of the nine rocky spires houses a stupa, and many of these pagodas were built at different times over the decades.
- Shwe Yat Taung Pagoda (1895)
- Shwe Yin Aye Pagoda (1913)
- Kyauk Thamban Pagoda (1914)
- Aung Taw Mu Pagoda & Su Taung Pyae Pagoda (1929)
- Pyilone Chantha Pagoda (Main Pagoda) (1933)
- Lower Kyike Htee Yoe Pagoda (1933)
- Upper Kyike Htee Yoe Pagoda (1934)
- Shwe Pyay Aye Pagoda (1950)

Unique Features
One of the most remarkable aspects of Taung Kwe Pagoda is its geographical uniqueness. Unlike a traditional pagoda built on a single hilltop, Taung Kwe consists of multiple limestone peaks, each crowned with a stupa. The tallest peak stands at 387 feet (118 meters), offering panoramic views of Loikaw and the surrounding landscapes. Visitors can explore the interconnected pagodas via narrow stairways and bridges linking the different peaks. The ascent can be steep, but the rewarding view from the top makes the climb worthwhile. For elderly visitors or those with mobility challenges, an elevator has been installed to provide easy access to the higher levels of the pagoda complex. At different times of the day, the pagoda offers varying scenic experiences. At sunrise and sunset, the golden stupas reflect the soft light, creating a magical atmosphere. The area also provides breathtaking views of Loikaw, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.

A Must-Visit Destination
Taung Kwe Pagoda is not only a place of worship but also a key tourist attraction in Kayah State. Pilgrims and travelers visit to experience its serene atmosphere, historical significance, and stunning views. Many believe that visiting all nine pagodas brings spiritual merit, and the tranquil setting allows for peaceful reflection.
