Payahtan Cave

Payahtan Cave

Kawthaung District, Pyigyimandaing Town, Tanintharyi Region

Location and Access:

The Payahtan Cave is located approximately 30 miles (estimated) from Pyigyimandaing Town in Kawthoung District. It is accessible via a branch road off the main road leading to Yadanarbon Village, a border village near Thailand. At the turnoff, there is a signboard indicating the way to the cave. The cave lies within the Tanintharyi mountain range, and local hunters report the presence of other caves in the area, according to local guides.

Historical Significance:

The cave is believed to have been used by King Alaungmintaya U Aung Zeya during his campaign against Ayutthaya. Local residents assert that the king and his forces cultivated land and established a base around the cave for months. Current caretakers have also presented evidence to support this historical connection. Due to regional instability in earlier times, the area saw little foot traffic. However, it has recently become a point of interest for visitors. Unfortunately, some tourists have defaced the cave walls by writing inscriptions.

Features of Payahtan Cave:

The cave has multiple entrances and exits scattered around the mountain. These include Aung Zeya’s Throne Cave, Wind Cave, and Pagoda Cave, along with numerous uncharted openings. According to locals, ancient pagodas were once abundant within Pagoda Cave, but many were stolen by vandals. Only a few relics remain. The Wind Cave is a narrow passage emitting cool breezes. Exploring the entirety of Bhurathang Cave requires more than a single day due to the vast number of cave openings and the dense surrounding forest. A natural stream flows near the mountain, adding to the area's scenic beauty.

Visitor Experience:

Visitors to Phayahtan Cave can enjoy:
  1. The serene shade and fresh air of the forest (though deforestation has reduced some of its density).
  2. A unique opportunity to explore a natural forest environment.
  3. The stunning beauty of rock formations and stalactites within the caves.
  4. Observing bats and other cave fauna.
  5. Capturing breathtaking photographs.
The richness of the experience varies depending on the interests of each visitor.

Current Infrastructure:

The road connecting Pyigyimandaing Town to Yadanarbon Village is currently under construction as a concrete road. If the 5-mile stretch to the cave entrance (as reported by locals) is also developed into a concrete road, Bhurathang Loain Cave could become a valuable destination for tourism, generating significant foreign revenue.

Future Potential:

Phayahtan Cave is a natural gift of the Tanintharyi region. Preservation and maintenance of its pristine condition, combined with the development of supporting infrastructure such as hotels and tourism services, would enhance its value. It holds great potential as a major tourist destination in Myanmar.

  1. ကိုယ်တွေရောက်တုန်းကရှိမှန်းတောင်မသိ

  2. Cave by itself attracts people’s curiosity anyway although it is anxiety-provoking. The value depends on how people treat the cave. Should not be abandoned.
