Discovering the Hidden Beauty of Dawei: A Journey to Waimithaka Mountain or Kanan Mountain
If you're a traveler seeking tranquility and a touch of history, Hmawbi, just outside of Yangon, offers a hidden gem that’s well worth the journey. Nestled in the outskirts, Waimithaka Mountain (also known as Kanan Mountain) is a beautiful spot that promises not only a peaceful retreat but also an adventure through the natural and cultural landscapes of the area. I decided to make the trip late in the afternoon, just before sunset, when the weather is perfect for a relaxing ride on my motorcycle. As I set off from the city, I knew this was going to be a special trip, offering me the chance to reconnect with nature and explore a place I had long wanted to visit. Located not far from the bustling city of Yangon, this mountain is a hidden retreat for anyone seeking a break from the urban hustle.

The Path to Wemitha Mountain

Wemitha Mountain is located near Kyaukhtauk Village in Yephyu Township, and it’s only about 40 minutes from the city center, making it easily accessible by car. The journey itself is scenic, with the countryside unfolding around you as you drive away from the city. While not too far, it feels like you're traveling to a different world – one where time slows down, and nature takes the lead. There are two primary routes to reach the mountain, both offering unique views of the area. The first route takes you along the Yangon-Dawei road, passing through Yephyu Bridge. This road will bring you right to the base of the mountain, near Kyaukhtauk Village. The drive is straightforward, but what makes it special are the quiet stretches where you can enjoy the natural beauty of the countryside. The second route starts from the old part of Dawei city, leading you through less-traveled paths. This route is especially lovely if you enjoy leisurely rides through lush fields and traditional landscapes, as you’ll be surrounded by panoramic views of the mountains and valleys that make Dawei famous for its natural charm.

The Hike Up the Mountain

Once you’ve reached the foot of the mountain, the real adventure begins. The hike up Waimithaka Mountain isn’t too strenuous, taking about 10 minutes to reach the top. The path is about 2.3 kilometers long, and while it’s relatively short, it can be rocky and uneven in places, so you should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for some light scrambling. As you ascend, the views become more breathtaking. The surrounding landscape, with its rolling hills, rice fields, and distant mountains, is a perfect backdrop for this peaceful hike. The journey up is serene, offering an escape from the everyday noise and allowing you to focus on the sounds of nature around you. If you’re lucky, you might even spot some wildlife along the way.

Reaching the Summit

The summit of Waimithaka Mountain is home to the Pagoda, a small but charming religious site. At the top, you’ll be treated to a sweeping 360-degree view of the countryside, with the mountains in the distance and the fields stretching out beneath you. It’s a great spot to relax, meditate, or simply take in the beauty of the world around you. One of the best times to visit is in the late afternoon, just before sunset. As the sun dips behind the horizon, the sky transforms into a vibrant array of oranges, pinks, and purples, and the landscape takes on a golden hue. The view from the top, with the sunset in the background, is simply mesmerizing.

Why Visit Waimithaka Mountain?

If you’ve never been to this part of Myanmar, I highly recommend taking a trip to Waimithaka Mountain. Not only is it a fantastic place to experience the peaceful side of Hmawbi, but it’s also a great opportunity to explore the rich cultural and natural heritage of the area. The Pagoda, in particular, offers a glimpse into the spiritual side of the region, making this mountain not only a place of natural beauty but also a historical landmark. Moreover, the journey to the mountain itself is just as rewarding. Whether you choose to ride through the countryside on a motorcycle or drive through scenic roads, the experience is both refreshing and enriching. You’ll find yourself taking in the beauty of Dawei from different angles, whether it's the fields, the hills, or the local villages. For anyone with a love for history, nature, and adventure, this place should be on your bucket list. If you’re a photographer, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to capture stunning shots of the mountain, the pagoda, and the surrounding views. Don’t forget to bring your camera – the scenery is just too good to miss!

A Motorcycle Journey You Won’t Forget

To make the most of this experience, you’ll need a motorcycle or a vehicle that can navigate the winding roads. It’s a great trip for motorbike enthusiasts, offering both a thrilling ride and a peaceful destination at the end. Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a beginner, the roads are not too challenging, and the beauty of the journey makes every minute worth it. If you’re ready for an unforgettable adventure that combines the beauty of nature, historical landmarks, and a little bit of physical activity, Waimithaka Mountain in Dawei is calling your name. This hidden gem will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated, and with memories to last a lifetime. Crd Photo Reference- Social Media
